Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth occurred on the 24th day of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative side as a child, thanks to Aunt Denise. Her aunt worked during the night shift as nurse, so she could pursue her love of theater and literature during the day. DuVernay immediately was captivated after showing her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread the cause of activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially conscious and taught the importance of speaking up through art. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has lived for many generations. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the historic civil right's march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her time in Selma and decided to make an documentary on the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. In the year 1990 she graduated from Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood California. As studying, DuVernay became interested in producing for television journalism. Her first job was as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to observe the house of one of the members of the jury, and then look through their trash. In the course of her duties, she became dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the publicity business. DuVernay started her career as a junior public relations assistant for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from the college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotions and lifestyle channels which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
